Germany’s Transport Ministry Backs a Maglev Comeback for Local Transit

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder is pushing to relaunch maglev (magnetic-levitation) systems in Germany as a federally supported option for local public transit, positioned to compete with subways and trams. The ministry frames modern maglev as a ready and competitive alternative to conventional guided-rail systems, with particular advantages in difficult terrain and challenging topography—a conclusion linked to a 2021 feasibility study commissioned under former minister Andreas Scheuer.

To enable funding, the government is working on opening up the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG) so that “innovative approaches,” explicitly including maglev, can be eligible for federal support. Under the GVFG framework, eligible transit infrastructure projects can receive up to 90% federal co-financing. The ministry points to roughly €2 billion available for such federal transit funding this year.

The announcement revives a long-running German debate that previously centered on the Transrapid concept.
