JR Central plans to invest ¥778 billion in capital spending for fiscal 2026 on a consolidated basis, up 6% from the fiscal 2025 plan and the highest level in company history.
A major focus is the Linear Chuo Shinkansen. The company will allocate ¥367 billion to maglev construction, including land acquisition and tunnel work. It will also spend ¥11 billion on maglev technology development, a 2.8x increase year over year.
That R&D spending targets cost reduction and future commercial use of high-temperature superconducting magnets, which do not require liquid helium cooling. The goal is to move that technology toward use in revenue-service vehicles.
JR Central also plans additional investment to improve transportation services, though the excerpt cuts off before the full details of that category.
