On April 8, JR Tokai announced that it had begun "survey excavation" to investigate the impact of tunnel construction on the surrounding areas in two sections of the Linear Central Shinkansen Line in Nagoya City and Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture. Shield tunneling machines are used to dig tunnels "deep underground" to a depth of 40 meters or more. This is the first shield tunneling project in Aichi Prefecture.
Construction began on a 10.1-kilometer section of the "First Chukyo Area Tunnel (Sakashita West Construction Section)" in Kasugai City and a section of the "First Chukyo Area Tunnel (Meijo Construction Section)" from Nagoya City to Kasugai City. Both tunnels will be fully excavated in the spring of 2025 after the results of the exploratory excavation are explained to local residents. Construction will continue until March 2014.
The start of excavation in the "Sakashita West Construction Area" was later than expected. Cutting of the concrete wall inside the emergency exit, which was necessary for the exploratory excavation, began in July 2010, but the wall was harder than expected, and it took until February 2012 to complete the work, which would have taken a maximum of two months in the other construction areas. It was necessary to continue cutting while replacing the parts of the shield machine that were cutting the wall.
Shield tunnelling for the Linear Central Shinkansen is being carried out first in the Tokyo area, and in September 2011, survey excavation was completed in the Higashi Yurigaoka construction zone in Kawasaki City.
