Ahead of the opening of the Chuo Shinkansen maglev line, Gifu Prefecture, all municipalities within the prefecture, and related organizations held a meeting to review their urban development strategy for making use of the new line.

The meeting on May 25 was attended by Gifu Governor Esaki, officials from every city, town, and village in the prefecture, and leaders of economic and tourism organizations.

Until now, the members had drawn up a town-planning strategy focused on the area around Nakatsugawa City, where the new station is planned. They now intend to revise the strategy so that related initiatives can be expanded across the entire prefecture.

At the meeting, Nakatsugawa City and Ena City presented initiatives they have already been pursuing. Nakatsugawa City explained that it is developing an industrial park around the planned station site and also plans to improve major arterial roads.

Based on these leading examples, the meeting participants aim to revise the town-planning strategy during the current fiscal year and move the initiatives forward.

A division chief in Gifu Prefecture’s Linear Promotion Division, Sasaki, said: “[Translated quote] The area where ‘Gifu Prefecture Station’ will be built will become the eastern gateway, but we want to make steady efforts so that its effects can be realized across the entire prefecture.”
