A safety ceremony was held for the Haginodaira section, the last of the five construction sections of the Chuo Shinkansen Central Alps Tunnel, which connects Iida City in Nagano Prefecture and Nakatsugawa City in Gifu Prefecture. Tunnel construction is expected to be completed in about five years, around the end of 2031.
The Haginodaira section is located in Achi Village. It includes the entrance to a work tunnel leading to the section where construction had not yet begun among the five sections of the Central Alps Tunnel. Some work started on May 15, and JR Central personnel and construction-related parties gathered on June 15 for the safety ceremony.
Takeshi Kamei, section manager in JR Central’s Nagoya Construction Department, said: “[Translated quote] We believe that we were able to start tunnel excavation thanks to the people of the local community, Achi Village, Nagano Prefecture, and many others involved.”
The Central Alps Tunnel is 23.3 kilometers long. With the start of work on the Haginodaira section, construction has now begun in all five sections. The work tunnel is about 11.5 meters wide and about 7.6 meters high. After approximately 1.9 kilometers of excavation, it will connect to the main tunnel.
About 700,000 cubic meters of excavated soil are expected from the work. The soil will be placed at a disposal site prepared by JR Central, and Achi Village also plans to use part of it for projects such as municipal housing construction and development of a materials storage site.
Kamei said: “[Translated quote] We will make every effort to steadily move the work forward while placing importance on construction safety, environmental conservation, and cooperation with the region.”
Achi Mayor Hideki Kumagai said: “[Translated quote] I hope the work will be carried out safely and securely as soon as possible, and that construction will proceed according to schedule.”
