I was going through a few discussions about North American projects and noticed that construction costs are often quoted, while the final cost can be quite different once factors such as infrastructure, land acquisition and operating costs are taken into account.

I think the door-to-door aspect is really important here. A flight may be faster in the air, but once you add getting to the airport, check-in, security, boarding and transfers, the difference can become much smaller. It would be interesting to see a proper comparison based on total journey time.

I think the main challenge is probably cost rather than the 1 cm clearance itself. If the lifecycle costs are competitive, TSB could still be an interesting option for medium-capacity passenger corridors.
