In the 1970s–80s, Ukraine researched maglev transport, exploring EMS and EDS suspension methods to achieve higher speeds with greater comfort. However, the program stalled due to prohibitively expensive infrastructure.
Prototype TP-01 was tested in 1979 in Moscow. Soviet planners had designed a Yerevan–Abovyan route (originally 250 km/h, later 180 km/h). Ukrainian institutions involved included FTINT, KPI, Glushkov Institute, and Transmag.
The 1986 Chernobyl disaster and 1988 Spitak earthquake disrupted progress. Despite scientific capabilities and technical advances, Ukraine’s maglev remained experimental and never entered service.
The case demonstrates how sustained investment in science and infrastructure is essential for turning ambitious ideas into operational technology. Political and economic turmoil in the 1980s cut short a potentially pioneering transport system. Today, with renewed focus on green mobility, the lessons remain relevant.
