JR Central to Start Work on Yamanashi Maglev Station, Aiming for 2031 Opening
Central Japan Railway (JR Central) will begin construction of the Linear Chuo Shinkansen’s Yamanashi Prefecture Station in Kofu within fiscal 2025, targeting completion in December 2031. The station will be one of six between Shinagawa and Nagoya and will be the second stop out of Tokyo, after the planned Kanagawa Prefecture Station in Sagamihara.
Unlike the underground stations at Shinagawa and Kanagawa, the Yamanashi station will be an above-ground, four-story structure about 32 meters (105 feet) tall, with ticket gates on the second floor and platforms on the fourth. The project covers roughly 1.2 kilometers across Kofu and neighboring Chuo City and includes five viaducts and six bridges over rivers and roads, with the platforms located on one of the viaducts.
JR Central will first develop a construction yard for material storage and turbid water treatment and build access roads for dump trucks and other heavy vehicles. Main work on viaducts and bridges is scheduled to start around summer 2026. Because the load-bearing ground lies 40–60 meters below the surface, foundation piles will be driven unusually deep. Soil will be tested every 100 meters along the route for contamination by cadmium, mercury, and other substances that could exceed environmental standards.
Construction traffic is expected to use the Shin-Yamanashi Ring Road and National Route 140, with an average of about 195 vehicles per day and up to roughly 280 at peak. JR Central held its first community briefing for residents on December 1 in Takamuro-cho, Kofu, and plans three more sessions in Kofu and Chuo during December. At the meeting, the company pledged to stagger construction vehicle traffic and strengthen safety training for workers.

With this start, all six stations on the Shinagawa–Nagoya section are now under construction. Even so, the opening date for the line remains unclear. JR Central already dropped its original goal of opening the Shinagawa–Nagoya segment in 2027 because of delays in the Shizuoka section.
About 100 people attended the ceremony, including Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki. JR Central President Shunsuke Niwa said the company will move forward with priority on safety, environmental protection, and coordination with local communities.
